Book Cover Design - As I Lay Dying - Personal Project

- Personal Project -

One of the benefits to designing the cover of a classic book is taking it out of the academic sphere and introducing it to a more casual readership, in this case: fans of the Gothic.

As I Lay Dying is one of my favourite books but I’ve never seen a cover that captures how dark and grotesque it actually is.
Addie Bundren is represented by the inverted coffin in the centre, which emits the smell of her rotting corpse that entangles each of her surviving relatives, represented here as symbols of their own personal hopes and fears.
